Starlink + 5G: How Ukraine Is Building an Internet Network Based on Two Independent Technologies

Ukrainian businesses are increasingly viewing satellite internet not as a replacement for traditional connectivity, but as a backup channel that can keep networks running when problems affect terrestrial infrastructure.

One of the most interesting approaches is combining Starlink with 4G/5G mobile networks or fiber-optic internet. This allows companies to avoid relying entirely on a single type of connection.

Why Do Businesses Need Two Internet Channels?

A typical office can have a fiber-optic connection, a mobile network, and Starlink operating simultaneously. Specialized networking equipment can distribute traffic between them or automatically switch users to a backup connection if the primary one fails.

In this setup, 5G provides fast terrestrial connectivity, while Starlink creates an independent connection through a satellite network. This means that problems with local infrastructure do not necessarily result in a complete loss of internet access.

For Ukraine, this is particularly relevant for companies with distributed infrastructure, retail stores, production facilities, logistics sites, and offices where even a short network outage can disrupt business operations.

Starlink Is Already Working With Ukrainian Businesses

In May 2026, Kyivstar announced an agreement that allows the company to officially resell Starlink services and equipment to Ukrainian businesses and government institutions. The offering is aimed at enterprises, schools, universities, hospitals, and other organizations that require reliable connectivity.

Starlink itself positions its business solutions as a way to provide backup connectivity and keep critical sites operational when terrestrial networks experience disruptions. Corporate customers can also use solutions designed to manage multiple terminals and support larger infrastructure.

How Does It Work in Practice?

A network can be built around a simple principle:

Primary connection → 5G / fiber

Backup connection → Starlink

When the primary connection is available, most traffic goes through it. If a failure occurs, a router or SD-WAN solution can automatically redirect critical services to the backup channel.

This can be particularly useful for cloud services, corporate VPNs, video surveillance systems, point-of-sale equipment, IoT devices, and other systems where even a short loss of connectivity can cause problems.

Why Not Use Starlink Alone?

Satellite internet has its own limitations. It requires a clear view of the sky, while connection performance can vary depending on conditions and network load.

That is why fiber or mobile connectivity can remain the primary connection for an urban office, with Starlink serving as a backup.

For remote locations, the situation can be reversed: Starlink can become the primary connection, while a mobile network serves as the backup.

The Ukrainian Scenario Is More Than Just “Two Internets”

The main advantage of this approach is not simply getting twice the speed. It is about network resilience.

When one connection depends on terrestrial infrastructure and the other uses satellite connectivity, a company effectively gets two independent routes to the internet. This is why the combination of Starlink and 5G could become a practical way to build resilient IT infrastructure in Ukraine.

In the future, hybrid networks like these may become a standard part of corporate infrastructure. The question will no longer be “Which internet connection should we choose?”, but rather “How many independent connections do we need to keep the business running?”
